Jesenice's steel mills needed something for the men to do between shifts, and in 1948 that something took shape as an ice hockey section inside the local Jože Gregorčič sports society. The town gave the club its nickname, Steelworkers, and for decades the two were inseparable: through the Yugoslav league years the club won the national title twenty-three times between 1957 and 1988.
Independence brought Slovenia its own league, and Jesenice kept winning it, nine championships between 1992 and 2011. Anže Kopitar came through the club's ranks before leaving for the Los Angeles Kings, where he lifted the Stanley Cup twice.
Debts topped two and a half million euros, and on 31 August 2012 the club filed for bankruptcy and was dissolved. In August 2014 the club was formally re-established under Anže Pogačar as president, this time as HDD Jesenice.
It has since put together four more Slovenian championships, two national cups and, in 2023, the Alps Hockey League title. The rivalry with HK Olimpija Ljubljana, played out as the Eternal Derby, has carried across both eras of the club's existence. Home games are still played at Podmežakla Hall.
