On a good night with the derby against IK Sävehof on the calendar, HK Aranäs fills Kungsbacka sporthall. The two clubs sit close enough to each other that the fixture has its own name, the Aranäsderbyt, and Sävehof's youth setup is the one program in Sweden bigger than the one Aranäs runs out of Kungsbacka.

The club traces back to 20 February 1947. What it has built since is less a run of titles than a habit of climbing back. The men's team first reached Elitserien in 2010/2011, lost its licence and dropped down in 2013/2014, came back up in 2015/2016, fell again in 2017/2018, and returned in 2020/2021 — reaching the playoffs for the first time the following season.

Hampus Wanne is the name Kungsbacka points to. He started his professional career at Aranäs in 2011 before the road took him through Önnereds HK and SG Flensburg-Handewitt to FC Barcelona. Pelle Linders went further back and further too, playing for the club through the 1980s and into the mid-1990s before a career at THW Kiel that ended with a Champions League winner's medal in 2007. Between those two eras sits a junior title from 1994, when the boys' team won the JSM-guld.

None of that changes what the club calls itself: Kungsbackas stolthet, the Pride of Kungsbacka, a town whose handball history still runs back to that February afternoon in 1947.
