Artemis

Two clubs stood behind Artemis '15, and the name was built to hold both of them at once. HV De Gazellen had played handball in Doetinchem since 1962; Apollo '70 had done the same in nearby Wehl from 1970. When the two sides agreed to merge on 1 June 2015, they reached for mythology to settle what to call the result: Artemis is shown as a gazelle, a nod to De Gazellen, and she is Apollo's twin sister, a nod to Apollo '70. The name carried both clubs forward without erasing either.

What Artemis '15 inherited was De Gazellen's record, not a blank sheet. That club had beaten Limburg Blauw-Wit 18–16 to win the Dutch Cup in 1981/82, took the Eerste Divisie three times through the 1990s, and had even gone as far as the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1984, where VIF G. Dimitrov Sofia ended the run. The merged club has not added to that list. Its men's side has moved between the Eredivisie and the Eerste Divisie, currently playing in the latter.

The closest thing Artemis has to an old grudge is Achilles, from Apeldoorn; the two meet in what is known locally as the Gelderse derby, and the shared province gives the fixture its edge. Doetinchem itself sits in the Achterhoek, a region the club wears as its own description rather than leaving to outsiders — it calls itself, plainly, the Achterhoek handball club. Home games are played at Sporthal de Bongerd, in red and black, in the same corner of Gelderland that gave the club both its halves.
