Basketball arrived in Bamberg in 1955 as a department of 1. FC 01 Bamberg and stayed there until the parent body went bankrupt in 1988 and the section had to stand on its own.
Under that backing Bamberg won nine Basketball Bundesliga titles between 2005 and 2017, a run few German clubs have matched, and added the German Cup on top, most recently in 2026.
The Brose Arena has retired the numbers of Nikos Zisis, Casey Jacobsen and John Goldsberry, players who came to define eras there rather than just pass through. Games against FC Bayern Munich carry the weight of the Bavarian Derby, while the shorter trip to face Würzburg Baskets is known simply as the Franken-Derby.
Brose sold its stake in 2023, and the club dropped the name to return to Bamberg Baskets, closing a chapter that had run for two decades. The timing was awkward: that same season the team missed the play-offs for the first time in 22 years.
