The Basketball Bundesliga stands as the premier professional basketball competition in Germany. Founded in 1966, it operates at the apex of the national pyramid, sitting directly above the second-tier ProA and third-tier ProB. The league differs significantly from its football counterpart, the Bundesliga, primarily through its use of a playoff system rather than a simple points-based conclusion. While the football league determines its champion by total points after a round-robin season with no playoffs, the BBL employs a post-season knockout stage. This structure sees the top eight teams from the regular season qualify for playoffs, where the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals are contested as best-of-five series.
The current season features 18 teams competing in a double round-robin format. Promotion and relegation connect the top flight with ProA, where the bottom two BBL sides are automatically relegated. Promotion to the BBL is determined by the ProA playoffs, subject to strict financial and infrastructure licensing criteria. The league has a distinct commercial identity, having integrated a title sponsor into its official name since 2016, a practice less common in German football where the league name often remains neutral. Additionally, all clubs must meet specific arena capacity minimums of 3,000 seats for licensing.
Historical success is distributed among several clubs, though Bayer Giants Leverkusen holds the record for most titles. In the modern era, Alba Berlin and Brose Bamberg are also among the most successful sides. The current reigning champion is FC Bayern Munich, which secured the 2024–25 title by defeating ratiopharm Ulm in the finals. This victory marked Bayern’s seventh league title and their second consecutive championship. The league is administered by the Basketball Bundesliga GmbH, a joint venture owned 74% by the clubs and 26% by the German Basketball Federation.
