About

ProB (officially the 2. Basketball Bundesliga ProB) is the third-tier professional basketball competition in Germany. It sits directly below the second-tier ProA and the top-tier Basketball Bundesliga (BBL). The league was established in 2007 by the Deutscher Basketball Bund (DBB) and the Arbeitsgemeinschaft 2. Basketball-Bundesliga e.V. (AG 2.BBL) during a restructuring that split the former single-division 2. Basketball Bundesliga into two separate tiers.

Operated by the 2. Basketball-Bundesliga GmbH, the league currently holds the naming rights of the BARMER 2. Basketball Bundesliga following an agreement with health insurer Barmer in 2018. It comprises approximately 26–29 teams divided into two geographical divisions: ProB Nord and ProB Süd. The regular season follows a home-and-away round-robin format within each division. Following this phase, the top eight teams from each division advance to a combined playoff tournament.

Promotion to the ProA is determined through these playoffs, with the winners of the North and South finals earning advancement. The playoff stage is contested in a best-of-three format. Conversely, the bottom two teams in each division face direct relegation to the 1. Regionalliga, the fourth tier of German basketball.

Bayer Giants Leverkusen stand as the most successful club in the league’s history, having secured the championship three times in 2013, 2019, and most recently in 2025. The Dragons Rhöndorf and Team Ehingen Urspring have each claimed the title twice, as have Oldenburger TB and ETB Miners Essen. The 2019–20 season was abandoned without a champion being declared due to the pandemic. In a notable historical instance in 2014, Oldenburger TB won the title but declined promotion to the ProA, returning to win again in 2015 before accepting promotion.

The structure differs from the ProA by utilising a regionalised two-division format to minimize travel costs. This serves as a developmental bridge for amateur clubs and reserve teams of higher-tier professional clubs, featuring lower facility requirements than the single nationwide ProA league.
