Thinley Jamtsho has captained Bhutan through 42 matches and scored 611 runs along the way, long enough to have been there in 2018 when the side won the ACC Eastern Region T20 Championship, going 2-1 through the tournament. He plays for a board that only came into being in 2001, when the Bhutan Cricket Council Board took the sport under its wing and joined the International Cricket Council the same year; associate status followed in 2017.

The runs have mostly come from elsewhere. Ranjung Mikyo Dorji has scored more than anyone else to wear the shirt, 669 in all, and Namgay Thinley struck the country's first T20I century. On the bowling side, Sonam Yeshey once took 8 for 7 in a single innings, figures that stand alone in the team's short history.

The team plays as The Dragons , in orange and yellow, and its women's side carries the same name. Cricket had already taken root in the Sarpang District around Gelephu before the board was formed, and Bhutan's first internationals came in 2003 at the Emerging Nations Tournament in Nepal, well before T20I status arrived in 2018. The first recognised T20I followed on 5 December 2019, against Nepal.

Gelephu itself only got a ground to match the ambition in February 2024, when Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck opened the Gelephu International Cricket Ground, built for Ngultrum 60 million and holding 2,000 spectators.
