Canton has not fielded an NFL side since 1927.
The team started out in 1903 as a local athletic club and did not take the Bulldogs name until the 1906 season. By then it was already playing in the Ohio League. The Bulldogs won it in their first year and again in 1923, going 25 games without a defeat across the two seasons.
Jim Thorpe ran the team through that stretch, playing and coaching from 1915 to 1920 and serving as the new league's first president. Guy Chamberlin and Pete Henry, both later inducted at the Hall of Fame built in the club's own city, filled out a roster.
None of it saved the franchise: it shifted to Cleveland in 1924, still winning the title under the Bulldogs name, before a second Canton attempt folded for good after the 1927 season. The club has not returned to the field since.
