Fourth place at the 2024 CECAFA Under-20 Championship, after a 3-1 defeat by Uganda in the play-off for third.
The team played its first match on 31 January 1995, beating Mauritius 2-1 in qualifying for that year's FIFA World Youth Championship. It went out at the group stage, with one draw and two defeats. It has never reached the final stage of the Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.
Regionally, the record reads better. Burundi finished runners-up at the CECAFA Under-20 Championship twice, losing the 2005 final to Ethiopia and the 2006 final to Uganda.
Both teams share the nickname the Fighting Swallows and the same green-red-white colours drawn from the flag, with the under-20s turning out in all green at home and all red away.
The name most associated with the side remains tied to that 2006 CECAFA final defeat to Uganda, the last time Burundi came within one match of a regional under-20 title.
