Vitali Kiricenko left Galați with 150 goals and 145 assists to his name; in July 2025 he came back as player-coach. CSM Dunărea Galați, known to its own as Dunărenii, still plays in red, white and blue, the same colours worn across town by the football club Oțelul Galați.
The club's best years came back to back: the 2014–15 title, settled 3–1 over Steaua Rangers in the final, and the 2015–16 title, taken from Sport Club Miercurea Ciuc in a match Digisport described as dramatic. Alexandru Munteanu, capped for Romania over a long career, was central to both. A Romanian Cup had already been won in 1988, and another followed in 2017.
Galați Ice Rink holds 3,500, a figure the club said in 2023 it would push to 5,100. Retirement nights carry their own weight here: in 2012, Andrei Nuțu, called in the local press the grandfather of Romanian hockey, played his last game as Dunărea beat Steaua 6–5.
None of it existed in Galați before 1932, when the section began under the name Gloria C.S.U. The war stopped it; the sport returned only in 1950, as Locomotiva Galați, in the second division, and it took the name Știința Galați to reach the top flight.
