«Eagles»
Bert Bell and Lud Wray put the club together on 8 July 1933 out of the wreckage of the bankrupt Frankford Yellow Jackets, and the name came from Bell's eye rather than the roster: the Blue Eagle he had seen stamped on Philadelphia City Hall, the emblem of Roosevelt's National Recovery Administration. The pre-Super Bowl era gave them three NFL Championships, in 1948, 1949 and 1960. Super Bowl LII, in the 2017 season, closed that gap; Super Bowl LIX, in 2024, did it again, with Jalen Hurts named the game's MVP.
They have been to five Super Bowls and lost three of them. During the Second World War the two clubs merged for a single season, in 1943, to play as the "Steagles." The Eagles have won the NFC East 17 times.
Reggie White spent eight seasons in the front seven and went into the Hall of Fame for it; Brian Dawkins did the same at safety. Jeffrey Lurie has owned the club since 1994, and Nick Sirianni, in his fifth season in charge, is trying to build a second Super Bowl into something closer to a habit rather than a repeat of the fifty-seven-year wait that came before the first.
