Freiburg

Twice a year the Wolves travel the Black Forest to face Schwenninger Wild Wings.

What plays under that name in Freiburg im Breisgau today is not, strictly, the club that started it. Ice hockey took root in the city in January 1961 under the ERC Freiburg banner, and that side built a following before running into debt it could not clear; it folded in 1984. Within months a successor, EHC Freiburg, formed in its place and inherited the tradition rather than starting one, which is why the club counts its history from 1961 even though the current association is younger.

The four 2. Bundesliga titles split cleanly across that divide, two won as ERC in 1981 and 1983, two more as EHC in 1989 and 2003. It sent Freiburg into the Deutsche Eishockey Liga for the only season the club has spent at the top of German hockey, and it ended in relegation after a last-place finish. Everything since has played out a level or several below that, including an Oberliga championship in 2015.

Six numbers hang retired inside the arena, among them Milan Chalupa's number 5. Simon Danner wore the captaincy for years before stepping away in 2024.

Home games run through the Echte Helden Arena, which holds 3,500.
