The programme dates to 1892, when the university fielded its first team and played its opening game on Christmas Eve.

South Carolina has never lifted a national title, and the trophy case has held conference honours rather than bigger prizes: the Southern Conference in 1933 and 1941, the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1969, and the SEC East in 2010. Ten bowl wins fill in the gaps, including two Outback Bowl victories over Michigan within three years of each other and a Duke's Mayo Bowl win over North Carolina in 2024.

The fiercest date on the calendar is against Clemson, a series old enough that it was formally named the Palmetto Bowl only in 2014, decades after the rivalry itself had become the fixture the state built its football autumn around. Georgia, North Carolina and Florida fill out the rest of a schedule with no shortage of edge.

George Rogers won the Heisman Trophy in 1980, and Sterling Sharpe, inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2025, remains the name Columbia reaches for when the conversation turns to what the programme has sent to the NFL alongside the likes of Jadeveon Clowney and Stephon Gilmore. Steve Spurrier, who resigned as head coach in October 2015, had earlier overseen three straight 11-win seasons behind quarterback Dylan Thompson — a run the programme has not matched since.

Shane Beamer has run the sideline in the years that followed, in front of a stadium that, on the right Saturday, is still the loudest room in the state.
