Golden Hurricane

A quieter one runs against Houston, contested for something called the Golden Screwdriver.

The program traces back to 1895, when Henry Kendall College fielded a team that beat the Bacone Indians 1–0. The Golden Hurricane name itself came later, chosen by a team vote in 1922 over the alternative "Golden Tornadoes" — old gold stayed, joined eventually by royal blue and crimson.

Tulsa's dominant years belong to the Missouri Valley Conference, where the school won the title 25 times, more than any other member in the league's history. Conference USA gave the program two more, in 2005 and 2012, each capped by a win in the Liberty Bowl. Eleven bowl wins in total dot the record, from the 1941 Sun Bowl through the Myrtle Beach Bowl in 2021.

Steve Largent came through Tulsa before his name went into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a Seattle Seahawks receiver, and Jerry Rhome finished runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in 1964.

Home games are played at Skelly Field at H. A. Chapman Stadium, holding around 30,000.
