Gyulai Termál

The Christián László Városi Sporttelep holds barely 2,700 people, a scale that suits a ground built for a county-town side rather than a stage for anything grander. Termál have played there through every version of themselves, and there have been many: founded in Gyula in 1920 as Gyulai Ipari Munkás Testedző Egyesület, the club spent the following decades being renamed by whichever regime or sponsor held sway, passing through Traktor, MEDOSZ and half a dozen other labels before settling, eventually, on the thermal-spa name the town is known for.

None of those changes moved them far from the lower rungs of Hungarian football. A runners-up finish in the NB II in 1980–81 remains the high-water mark in the national pyramid, either side of two NB III titles won thirty years apart, in 1950 and 1998. The Magyar Kupa has never gone their way beyond a second round reached three times in the mid-2010s. More recently the club has found itself winning at county level instead, taking both the Békés county championship and the county cup in 2023–24, a domestic double sized to match where the team now sits rather than where it once pushed to reach.

One name travelled further than the club did: Kenneth Otigba passed through the Gyula academy from 2000 before moving on to SC Heerenveen and Hungary's youth sides, a rare case of the town producing a player for export rather than keeping him.

What still sharpens a Saturday in Gyula is the fixture with Békéscsaba 1912 Előre, played a short drive apart and known locally as the vármegyerangadó, the county derby. Hódmezővásárhelyi FC supply the other grudge, but it is the neighbouring-cities meeting with Békéscsaba that carries the weight of the rivalry.
