About

The Magyar Kupa is a knockout tournament that distinguishes itself by inviting amateur sides to challenge Hungary’s top-flight clubs. Founded in 1909, it predates the national league championship and currently operates as the second most prestigious domestic trophy. The competition features 128 teams in a single-elimination format. Early rounds serve lower-league participants from NB III and county leagues, with matches regionalized to reduce travel costs. The Round of 64 marks the entry of the 12 NB I clubs and 16 NB II clubs into the fray.

All fixtures are played as single-leg encounters, culminating in a final held at the Puskás Aréna in Budapest. Victory in the tournament grants the winner a spot in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds. Unlike the round-robin structure of the NB I, the cup format allows for sudden-death scenarios where lower-tier teams can eliminate top-flight giants.

Ferencvárosi TC holds the record for the most titles, with 25 victories as of the 2025–26 season. They also share the record for the most consecutive wins, having achieved this feat three times across different eras. The current champions are Ferencváros, who secured the title by defeating Zalaegerszeg in extra time. The competition is officially known as the MOL Magyar Kupa due to sponsorship. It remains distinct from the defunct Szuperkupa, which was a single match between the league and cup winners. There is no direct promotion or relegation link between the cup and the league system.

While the league determines the national champion through consistent performance, the Magyar Kupa offers a different narrative focused on knockout drama. The inclusion of teams from various levels ensures that the competition spans the entirety of Hungarian football, from local village sides to the major metropolitan clubs. This structure maintains the cup's relevance across all tiers of the sport within the country.
