Kaposvári Rákóczi's clearest successes came a level below the top flight, not in it: Nemzeti Bajnokság II titles in 1979/80 and 1986/87 sent the club up into Hungary's elite division, the closest it has come to belonging there. Neither stay lasted, and the highest finish it has managed in Nemzeti Bajnokság I remains sixth, in 2007/08 — a season that also took it to the semi-final of the Hungarian Cup, still its deepest run in that competition.

Most of the club's history has played out a tier lower still. It has topped Nemzeti Bajnokság III eleven times, from 1941/42 through to 2017/18, drifting back down almost as often as it climbed out. A county championship and cup double followed in 2016, in Somogy — the region that gives the club one of its nicknames, Somogyiak.

The club traces back to 15 August 1923, when it was founded in Kaposvár as Rákóczi Sport Club. It played for stretches under other names — Kinizsi from 1955, and briefly as the Bene Ferenc football academy in 2015 and 2016 — before the Rákóczi name and the 1923 founding date were restored. It plays in green and white at the Rákóczi Stadion, which holds 7,000, and is known to its own supporters simply as Kraci.
