Pécsi MFC

Zoltán Gera wore Pécsi MFC's red and black before West Bromwich Albion, Fulham or the Hungary captaincy ever entered the conversation, one of a handful of names — Dénes Dibusz, Vukašin Poleksić, Pál Dárdai among them — who later carried the club's name well beyond Pécs.

The club itself has worn three names since 22 August 1950, when it registered as Pécsi Dózsa. A merger of five local sides in 1973 produced Pécsi Munkás Sport Club, and with it came the red and black, inherited from one of the merging clubs, Pécsi Ércbányász SC — a break from the blue, purple and white that Dózsa had played in. In 1995 the club became Pécsi Mecsek Futball Club, and supporters shortened the initials into the nickname that has stuck since, Pamac, though older voices around the ground still call the side Munkás, after the name it carried for more than twenty years.

Silverware has been thin: a Magyar Kupa win in 1989–90 remains the one major trophy, either side of a runner-up finish in the league in 1985–86 and two lost cup finals, in 1977 and 1986. Promotion has been the more frequent business — the club has topped Nemzeti Bajnokság II four times, in 1958, 1976, 2002 and 2010, and won the third tier in 2019.

Derby day in Baranya county means Komlói Bányász SK, a fixture with more weight behind it than most on the calendar, with Szentlőrinc SE and Kaposvári Rákóczi FC as older rivals. Home is the PMFC Stadion, also known as the Újmecsekaljai, holding 10,000.

Under whichever name it carried, the club Gera left behind has never stopped being the side founded in Pécs in August 1950.
