«Hokies»
The Hokies' high-water mark still gets measured against the seasons Frank Beamer ran the sideline: 238 wins between 1987 and 2015, a 23-game bowl streak, and a run to the BCS National Championship Game after the 1999 season that ended in a loss to Florida State.
The program's first outing came on October 21, 1892, a 14–10 win over St Albans Lutheran Boys School, four years before the maroon and burnt orange colours replaced the original cadet gray and black. That same year a student named O.M. Stull won a yell contest with the word "Hoki" — it hardened into "Hokie" and stuck, retiring the old "Gobblers" nickname that had come with a live turkey mascot; the costumed HokieBird didn't arrive on the sideline until 1981.
The program's clearest honours include a Big East run in the 1990s and a Sugar Bowl win over Texas in 1995.
None of it carries the weight locally of the Commonwealth Cup, contested against Virginia since the schools first met in 1895; Virginia Tech takes a 62–39–5 edge into it as of 2025.
