Football at the University of Miami started small, a freshman-only squad fielded in 1926 before varsity play followed a year later. The programme has since gone through stretches when it had no business competing with the sport's traditional powers.

The five consensus national championships, taken in 1983, 1987, 1989, 1991 and 2001, are spread across three different coaching regimes, which is itself a comment on continuity.

Vinny Testaverde won the Heisman Trophy in 1986, Gino Torretta in 1992, and the defensive side of the program sent Ted Hendricks, Ed Reed and Michael Irvin into the Hall of Fame.
