Ionikos

In the summer of 2015, Ionikos finished top of the A2 North Group and had a place waiting in the top division. It never took it up. Financial trouble forced the club to withdraw before a ball was kicked, and Archelaos Katerinis took the spot instead.

That benchmark was set in the 1980s. The championships kept coming into the early 1990s, and the club paired them with cup wins in 1987 and 1993 to complete the Double both times. Ten league titles in all, five cups and a single Super Cup in 1999 leave Ionikos the most decorated handball club in the country's history, though the crest bears no nickname beyond the club's own name.

The 2010s brought relegation to the A2 Ethniki and then the withdrawal that handed the promotion away. Ionikos worked its way back to the top flight only in 2022–23, with former player Giannis Arvanitis, once part of the club's playing ranks, now in charge as coach. The youth section has kept pace, taking the Panhellenic Youth Championship in 2023, and the club now carries the backing of medical group Affidea as sponsor. Matches are played at the Zacharias Alexandrou arena in Nea Filadelfeia, a ground that seats 1,500.
