The closest Team Melli have come to gold in Asia is bronze, taken in Bahrain in 2014, and even that stands alone.

Iran's handball federation was founded in 1975 and joined the International Handball Federation three years later, but the national side itself only took shape in 1987, debuting at the 1989 Asian Championship in China with an eighth-place finish. It trains and plays at the Shahid Ghasem Salimani Handball Hall in Tehran.

On the world stage the team has appeared twice, in 2015 and 2023, finishing 21st both times. It did not qualify for the 2025 championship that followed.

The Asian Games have brought closer to what a major medal looks like. Iran took bronze in Doha in 2006, then silver in Guangzhou in 2010 after losing the final to Kuwait.

An Olympic tournament has never featured Iran's name. The side entered qualification for both the 2016 and 2024 Games and came away from each without a place.
