China have not troubled the podium at an Asian Championship in decades, and the 2024 tournament followed the recent pattern: a tenth-place finish, well off the pace set by South Korea, Japan, Qatar and Iran. Serbian coach Dragan Đukić took over the national side in the 2024/2025 cycle, arriving with previous spells in charge of Great Britain, Israel, Montenegro and Switzerland.

Those years ran through the early 1980s. China won gold at the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi, took silver four years later, and added bronze in 1994 — a medal the team has not matched at that competition since. The Asian Men's Handball Championship has been tougher ground: runner-up finishes in 1979 and 2000 stand as the closest China have come, with third-place results in 1977 and 1991 rounding out a record that has never produced the title itself.

The one Olympic appearance came at Beijing 2008, where China took the floor as hosts and finished 12th. The Chinese Handball Association itself dates to 1979, though the national team had already appeared at the Asian Championship two years earlier, in 1977.
