Japan secured a narrow victory over China with a 31-27 scoreline in their Asian Games encounter on 20 September 2026. The result leaves both nations level on points after the opening fixture of the tournament.
China had been building momentum ahead of this clash, winning five consecutive matches in January against regional opponents. Their recent record included victories over Hong Kong, Iran, India, Australia and Jordan, with scores suggesting consistent offensive output.
Japan's preparation looked less straightforward. They suffered defeats to Kuwait and Bahrain in late January, though they managed to edge past Iraq and hold a draw with South Korea. That inconsistent run may have made them cautious on this occasion.
The final tally of 31-27 tells us little about how the match unfolded. No detailed events were recorded, so we cannot say whether Japan pulled away late or held on for dear life. The two-point margin suggests a contest that could have gone either way.
Both teams enter the standings with zero games, zero wins and zero points. The table currently shows China in third and Japan in first, but that ordering means nothing with no other results to compare against.
What matters is that Japan kept their heads when it counted. They finished ahead despite a patchy form heading into this tournament, and now have one foot in progressing further than China.
