Kano Pillars

There is no shortage of ambition around Sani Abacha Stadium.

The club was formed in 1990, when three amateur sides in the city — WRECA FC, Kano Golden Stars and Bank of the North FC — merged into one. It still lists a Federation Cup won in 1953 among its honours, a result inherited from that pre-merger lineage rather than earned under the Pillars name.

Their real weight of history sits in the run from 2012 to 2014, three straight Nigerian Premier League titles on top of the one they had already taken in 2007–08. A Federation Cup followed in 2019, settled on penalties against Niger Tornadoes, and a Super Cup in 2008. Continentally, the high point remains a CAF Champions League semi-final in 2009.

The name most attached to that era of success is Rabiu Ali, the long-serving captain who anchored the side through its title years and remained a fixture of the national team picture throughout.

That home form matters most against Barau, whose meetings with Pillars are fought out as the Kano Derby, the fixture the city calls the Pyramid City Derby.
