The franchise did not start in Michigan at all — it played its first seasons in Portsmouth, Ohio, as the Spartans, and only took the Lions name after moving to Detroit in 1934. What followed were four NFL championships before the Super Bowl existed, in 1935, 1952, 1953 and 1957, won by a team built around players like quarterback Bobby Layne and linebacker Joe Schmidt. Since then, nothing: the Lions are the only team that has existed for the entire Super Bowl era without ever reaching one.
The closest the club came to breaking that pattern was 1991, when Wayne Fontes coached a team led by running back Barry Sanders into the NFC Championship Game and lost. Ford Field , the club's downtown stadium since it opened, holds 65,000 for football, expandable to 70,000.
The Super Bowl the franchise has chased since 1966 is still not on the résumé.
