The program traces back to a first game on 28 November 1891, against Washington & Jefferson. Nothing else from that founding season carried forward except the will to keep playing.
What has carried forward since 1895 is the Backyard Brawl, the rivalry with the Pittsburgh Panthers, a border fight fought over more than a century with no love lost on either side.
Sam Huff's number 75 hangs retired at Morgantown alongside five others, but Huff's case stands apart: a Pro Football Hall of Famer whose college shirt the university took out of circulation for good. Chuck Howley went further still, reaching a Super Bowl MVP award after leaving, one of four Mountaineers products enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. On the sideline, Don Nehlen and Bobby Bowden both passed through Morgantown before building the coaching reputations that followed them elsewhere.
The Mountaineers have won 17 bowl games, from a Sugar Bowl in 2005 to an Orange Bowl in 2011.
