OAR Coruna

A Coruña's handball scene has run for decades out of a room barely bigger than a school hall: the Pabellón San Francisco Javier holds 230 people, and Los Azules have played there since a Catholic youth group in the Old Town, the Agrupación de Acción Católica, set up sections for basketball, football and handball in 1952.

The club reached the Primera División in 1976 and held its place there for several seasons, no national title, no Galician cup, in the men's senior record. What there has been is a string of promotions, the latest in May 2025, when OAR Coruña beat Silbon Cordoplas La Salle 42-26 in the play-off for a place in the División de Honor Plata. The scoreline drew complaints from rivals over match-fixing; the Xunta de Galicia sent its congratulations regardless.

Two names carry more weight at the club than the results. Gabriel de Melo, a defensive specialist, kept playing through a cancer diagnosis. And "Chalo," who came up through the youth academy, went on to play for the Spanish national team.

The rivalry that matters locally is with Calvo Xiria, the A Coruña province derby; on the wider Galician stage, Cisne is the name that raises the temperature. For a club its size, the number that says the most is still 1952 — the year it started.
