Oberwil/Therwil

Oberwil and Therwil sit next to each other in the Leimental valley south of Basel, close enough that their handball players have spent decades on the same courts. Since neither village could field a strong senior side alone, HC Oberwil and HC Therwil pooled their players into SG Oberwil/Therwil, competing in the Swiss 2. Liga and the regional Regio Cup for Nordwestschweiz, with occasional forays into the national Schweizer Cup.

HC Oberwil dates back to November 27, 1961; HC Therwil formally registered as a club on August 8, 1988, though its players had already been organised as a section of a local sports club since 1972. The joint venture lets both feed a shared structure known as HSG Leimental rather than compete for the same pool of local talent.

Matches are played in the Thomasgarten Sporthalle on Schmiedengasse, a triple gymnasium roughly 44 by 26 metres with a gallery for spectators rather than fixed terracing — reports from busier fixtures have put crowds at around 300. The club plays in yellow and black.

The closest thing to a rival is HB Blau Boys Binningen, another Leimental club, and their meetings are known locally as the Leimental-Derby. Silverware has stayed regional: the men's team took the Regio Cup in 2023/24, 2024/25 and 2025/26, beating SG Wahlen Laufen in each final, while the women's side won three straight Regio Cups from 2022/23 before losing the 2025/26 final to SG Magden/Möhlin/Pratteln.

None of that has translated into national silverware. SG Oberwil/Therwil has never held a Swiss Championship or Swiss Cup title, and no player currently at the club is known to have been called into the national team — a gap the wider HSG Leimental setup has filled in the past, but not through Oberwil/Therwil itself.
