Some records trace an earlier version of the side, Prisons XI, back to the 1960s, but the club now competes as an entity dated to 1977, nicknamed the Jungle Kings and playing in maroon shirts with yellow sleeves.

Continental football has come in short bursts rather than sustained campaigns: a preliminary round in the CAF Champions League in 2006 and again in 2007, and a first-round exit in the CAF Cup back in 1999.

Form has swung hard in recent years. Relegation ended the 2023–24 season, but Police XI won the First Division North the following year and returned to the top flight for 2025–26. Gaborone United and Township Rollers remain the matches that matter most, without a shared derby name to package the rivalry.
