Tenney Stadium sits on the Marist College campus in Poughkeepsie. That climb took time: the team started as a club sport in 1965, earned varsity status at the Division III level in 1978, and moved up to Division I-AA, now the FCS, in 1993.

The championships came in different leagues as the program changed conferences. Marist topped the Atlantic Collegiate Football Conference in 1990 and beat Brooklyn 40–0 in the ACFC Bowl that followed. Titles in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference arrived in 1994, 2006 and 2007, each shared with a co-champion, and the Pioneer Football League crown came the same way in 2013, split with Butler. That 2013 side also set the program's win record with eight victories in a season.

He kicked for Marist from 2009 to 2012 before reaching the Pro Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks, and he set the Super Bowl record for field goals in a single game, five, in Super Bowl LX.
