Red Raiders

Patrick Mahomes threw for record numbers in Lubbock before a single NFL snap, and Texas Tech still points to him as proof of what its offense can produce — Baker Mayfield, a walk-on nobody else wanted, left with a Heisman Trophy after transferring in and rewriting the program's passing history alongside him. That lineage runs through Mike Leach, who arrived in 2000 and built the spread attack that made those numbers possible, turning Texas Tech into a place quarterbacks wanted to play even when the win totals lagged behind the yardage.

The university itself came out of a 1923 act signed by Governor Pat Neff, and football under the Red Raiders name has mostly been a story of stretches rather than dynasties: nine Border Conference titles between 1937 and 1955, a share of the Southwest Conference crown in 1976 and again in 1994, then a long wait before the Big 12 Championship Game victory in December 2025, a 34–7 win over BYU that stands as the program's biggest conference prize. A month later, the season ended in the Orange Bowl, an 8-point loss to Oregon.

Bowl trips have followed a similar rhythm of near-misses and sudden reversals — the 2004 Holiday Bowl win over California by 14, the tighter 2023 Independence Bowl and 2024 Texas Bowl victories — against an all-time bowl record still under.500. Between 1996 and 2010, Texas Tech was the only Big 12 school to post a winning season every single year, a run that outlasted three coaching changes.

None of it carries the weight of the Lone Star Showdown against Texas, a series Texas leads by 36 games and one that still empties Lubbock on game week. Oklahoma State and TCU fill in around it, but Texas is the one rivalry the Red Raiders measure themselves against.
