Ski felt like nothing more than an ordinary away fixture until March 2024, when a win there sent Tiller Håndball's men up to the 1. Division, the second tier of Norwegian handball.

Handball at Tiller runs inside Tiller IL, a multi-sport club from the Trondheim suburb of the same name that has organised local sport since 1916; the handball wing never split off with its own founding date or its own nickname, and its members are simply known by the club's blue colours, as "de blåkledde". That absence of a separate identity says something about how the section has operated. There are no national titles or cup runs in its history, and no player has gone on from Tiller to the Eliteserien or the national team.

The promotion changed the scale of the fixtures without changing much else. In their first season back in the 1. Division, 2025/2026, the team settled into the middle of the table and stayed there, neither threatened by relegation nor close to the top. The club leans on partnerships with Heimdal Håndball and Nidelv IL to bring players through, a arrangement that matters more to a club this size than any single result does.

Within Trondheim handball, the sharper rivalry runs against Heimdal and Nidelv themselves — the same clubs Tiller cooperates with on developing players also field the teams it meets most often on the local calendar.
