Toreros

Between 2005 and 2019 the Toreros won the Pioneer Football League title eleven times, and the run started under Jim Harbaugh, who took over in 2004 and within two seasons had the team going 11–1 twice, in 2005 and 2006, good enough for the Mid-Major National Championship both years. The league titles kept coming long after Harbaugh left for bigger jobs, through 2011, 2012 and then a stretch from 2014 to 2019.

What that dominance never quite bought them was a postseason breakthrough. Five trips to the NCAA Division I FCS playoffs, in 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, produced a single win, over Cal Poly in 2016, 35–21. The programme moved up to Division I FCS in 1993, decades after the university fielded its first team in 1956.

Torero Stadium holds about 6,000, modest by the standards of the sport but enough for a rivalry that no longer gets played out on the field: the meetings with San Diego State, the crosstown Aztecs, stopped after a 37–3 loss in 2015. The colours, Navy and Torero Blue against white, have stayed constant through all of it.

The program's clearest link to the NFL runs through Jamal Agnew, drafted in 2017, first with Detroit, then Jacksonville and Kansas City. Dalton Kincaid followed him into the league in 2023, taken by Buffalo as a tight end.
