No rivalry has had time to settle in Toronto yet, but the league gave the Tempo a ready-made one: Portland Fire, the only other side to join the WNBA in 2026, sharing the same expansion draft pool and the same draft-night attention. Nothing about it is old or bitter — it is a rivalry of timing, two teams built in parallel and measured against each other before either has played a game.

The franchise itself exists because the WNBA looked outside the United States for the first time.

Ownership reaches well beyond basketball. Larry Tanenbaum chairs the group, Serena Williams holds a stake, and Masai Ujiri joined as a principal owner in April 2026 after his years running the Raptors.
