The club took shape in 1997, under the ownership of the Washington Wizards, and opened its first WNBA season in 1998. Chamique Holdsclaw arrived as the first overall pick in 1999 and carried the team to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2002, the first sign that the project could compete. What followed did not build in a straight line.

Thibault's Mystics reached the WNBA Finals in 2018 and were swept by the Seattle Storm. They came back a year later with Elena Delle Donne leading the roster, beat the Connecticut Sun 3–2, and took the franchise's only championship in 2019.
