Znojmo Orli

Znojmo sits close to the Austrian border. HC Orli Znojmo grew out of a Sokol gymnastics section founded in 1933, long before the eagle on the crest or the current name arrived.

The club reached the Extraliga in 1999 and took bronze there in 2006, but the finances behind that run gave out in 2009: when the main sponsor, E.ON, pulled out, Orli sold their top-flight licence to Kometa Brno for roughly 25 million koruna and dropped down a tier. In the Austrian-based ICE Hockey League they took silver in 2015/16, good enough for a place in the Champions Hockey League, and that season against Vienna Capitals in the so-called Ost-Derby is as close as the club has come to a golden era. COVID-era budget cuts forced a 60 percent reduction in 2020, and by 2022 the club was back to buying a second-tier licence, this time from Kometa Brno's reserve side, just to keep playing.

The Kometa fixture, the Jihomoravské derby, is the one that still matters most at home, sharpened by the memory of that 2009 sale. On the ice, the club's clearest identity came through its own academy: the group that won the Junior Extraliga in 2010/11 supplied several of the names who later carried the senior team through its lean years, in a way the imported NHL players who passed through during the 2004/05 lockout never did.

None of it has settled the club anywhere for long — promoted to the Chance Liga in 2023/24, relegated again after a single season. What has stayed constant is Nevoga Arena, built in 1970 and given its roof seven years later, now holding 4,800 people in a town that keeps finding its way back there.
