City Oval
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
Formerly: Alexandra Park, Pietermaritzburg Oval
City Oval is a cricket ground in the Pelham suburb of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Its name changes with the times. It is one of three first-class grounds in the world to host a tree inside the boundary ropes.
The pavilion is the oldest part of the site.
The ground hosted two matches during the 2003 Cricket World Cup, but the tournament was not the reason for the stadium’s existence. It was built for local cricket, and it remains the home of the KwaZulu-Natal Inland team. The surface is maintained by the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union; there is no official website.
What makes the place distinct is not its age alone, but the way it has been kept in use. It is a place where the game has been played for more than a century.
