«Tuskers»
Pietermaritzburg sits inland from Durban, in the hills of KwaZulu-Natal, and its cricket has long lived a step below the coastal city's professional franchise. The union built its own first-class side in 2006, taking the field that season in the South African Airways Provincial Three-Day Challenge as Natal Inland.
The team plays out of City Oval, also known as Alexandra Park, a ground with room for around 12,000 in the centre of the city. In black and blue, the side spent its early years compiling a domestic record with little notice beyond the province, until 2013/14, when it beat Northerns to the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge and then Gauteng to the T20 Challenge for its first double. A second T20 title followed in 2015/16 against Border, and in 2017 the union beat Free State to lift the Africa T20 Cup.
Cricket South Africa's 2021 overhaul of the domestic game folded the union into a new 15-team provincial structure and gave it a new identity, the Tuskers. Promotion to the first division came in 2023, and in 2025 the side were declared joint winners of the Division Two One-Day Challenge after rain washed out the final against Border.
Kyle Abbott, Tabraiz Shamsi and Dane Vilas have all worn the union's colours, and Devon Conway played here before New Zealand ever picked him. Matches against KwaZulu-Natal, the Dolphins franchise on the coast, are still known locally as the KwaZulu-Natal Derby, a fixture that carries a difference in standing as much as a rivalry: the Tuskers have collected provincial and regional titles, but a place among the top tier of South African franchise cricket has so far stayed with the coast.
