About

CSA 3-Day Series Division 2 operates as the second-tier first-class cricket competition in South Africa. It sits below the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 and serves as a crucial development pathway for provincial teams. The structure allows sides with developing infrastructure to compete while aiming for promotion to the top flight. The season comprises a round-robin league phase followed by a final between the two highest-placed teams in the division to decide the champion. The competition was established for the 2004–05 season as the UCB Provincial Cup. This launch marked a significant restructuring by Cricket South Africa, separating professional franchise teams from provincial entities. Over time, the tournament has undergone various name changes, including under the South African Airways and CSA Provincial Three-Day Challenge banners. A major format shift occurred for the 2021–22 season, abandoning the single-division setup for a two-tier system. Matches transitioned from three-day to four-day durations to align with the premier tier. Promotion and relegation function automatically between the divisions. One team ascends from Division 2 to Division 1, while another drops down based on a points system that can include a two-year average incorporating white-ball performance. Northern Cape Heat secured back-to-back titles in the 2021–22 and 2022–23 campaigns, while KwaZulu-Natal Inland claimed the crown in 2024–25. The current roster features Border, Northern Cape, Mpumalanga, Easterns, Limpopo, and South Western Districts. Unlike the top tier, which relies on superior governance and commercial stability, this division focuses on building the financial and operational models of its participants.
