The CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division Two operates as the second tier of South African domestic List A cricket. The competition sits directly below the first-division tournament, which carries the former title of the CSA One-Day Cup. A significant domestic restructuring in 2021/22 established the current two-division format, replacing the previous franchise-based model with provincial representation. This reform created the specific national second-division league structure that exists today.
Clubs compete in a single round-robin league format. Each team plays every other participant once, resulting in seven matches per team during the league stage. The top two teams at the conclusion of the group phase advance to a final to determine the champion. Promotion and relegation links exist between the two tiers, ensuring movement based on league performance, although the exact number of teams affected can vary by season.
The field of play includes six teams for the current campaign: Border, Northern Cape, Mpumalanga, Easterns, Limpopo, and South Western Districts. Previous seasons have seen additional sides such as KwaZulu-Natal Inland and South Africa Emerging Players. Historical results show KwaZulu-Natal Inland winning the inaugural 2021/22 edition and South Western Districts claiming the title in 2022/23. The 2024/25 championship was shared between Border and KwaZulu-Natal Inland following a rain-affected final.
The competition serves as a developmental platform for provincial cricketers. It focuses on emerging talent and lower-tier provinces, distinguishing its role from the top-tier Division One which features stronger provincial sides and franchise-based teams like the Dolphins and Titans.
