About

The CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge Division Two is the second tier of South African List A cricket. It sits below the top-flight competition and was created during a domestic restructuring that began with the 2021–22 season. Before that split, the single-division tournament existed without a formal second tier. The competition is administered by Cricket South Africa (CSA).

The format relies on a single round-robin league stage. Each team plays every other side once, with bonus points awarded for high run rates or large victory margins. The top two teams in the standings advance to a final to decide the champion. The eight teams currently participating are Border, Easterns, Knights, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, South Western Districts, and the South Africa Emerging Players team. The emerging side serves as a developmental pathway for players outside the established provincial squads.

Performance determines movement between the tiers. The winner of Division Two earns promotion to the first division for the following season. The bottom-placed teams in the top tier are relegated to this competition. The number of teams involved in this exchange varies from year to year, but the system maintains a clear hierarchy based on results.

Historical results show a shifting landscape. KwaZulu-Natal Inland won the inaugural 2021–22 title. Limpopo Tuskers claimed the championship in 2022–23, while the South Africa Emerging Players team took the 2023–24 edition. The 2024–25 season ended in a shared title for KwaZulu-Natal Inland and Border following a rain-affected final. The competition operates separately from the CSA Provincial Four-Day Series Division Two, which is a first-class multi-day contest. It also differs from the CSA T20 Knock-Out Competition, which uses a group and knockout format.

Knights (Free State) holds the record for the most titles in the overall history of the CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge, including the pre-division era. This achievement places them among the most successful clubs in the sport’s domestic history.
