North West

North West cricket did not begin as North West at all. In 1989 the side took the field as Western Transvaal, representing a corner of the old Transvaal before South Africa's provincial map was redrawn; when the North West province emerged from pieces of Transvaal and the Cape in 1996, the team took the new province's name with it. The Dragons tag came later still, arriving in April 2017 when the union rebranded its provincial sides — from 2004/05 it was folded into Gauteng under the Highveld Lions banner, with North West Cricket Union carrying on underneath for women's, youth and development cricket until Cricket South Africa scrapped the franchise system in 2020/21 and sent North West back out as the Dragons in Division One.

They play at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom. Marco Jansen made his List A and first-class debut there for North West in 2018, part of a production line that has also sent Chris Morris and Dwaine Pretorius through the province's ranks.

The men's side has never lifted the Currie Cup or the provincial one-day title. The women's team has had rather more to show for itself, taking both the Provincial T20 Cup and the One Day Cup in Division Two in the 2023/24 season. Against Limpopo in the 2018 Africa T20 Cup, North West put together 262 runs — at the time, the second-highest total ever recorded in T20 cricket.
