About

The CSA 4-Day Series is South Africa's premier first-class cricket competition, founded in 1889 with the inaugural season contested in 1889–90. The trophy was originally donated by Sir Donald Currie, and the tournament sits at the top of the domestic cricket pyramid as the sole first-class contest governed by Cricket South Africa (CSA). The structure has evolved significantly since its inception. A major shift occurred in 2004, moving from a provincial model to a six-franchise system that lasted until 2021. During that period, the Titans claimed six titles. In 2021, CSA reverted to a provincial framework, splitting the country into two divisions with promotion and relegation between them. Division One currently features eight teams: the Dolphins, North West Dragons, Knights, Warriors, Titans, Western Province, Lions, and KwaZulu-Natal Inland. The format consists of a single round-robin league stage followed by a final between the top two teams. Matches are played as four-day first-class contests. One team moves between Division One and Division Two each season. The Lions hold the record for the most successful team in the competition's entire history, with 25 titles. They also remain the current champions, having won the 2023–24 title by defeating Western Province in the final. This competition remains distinct from the CSA One-Day Cup and the CSA T20 Challenge, which are the top limited-overs competitions. It differs from the SA20, a franchise-based T20 league, as it focuses on traditional representative cricket.
