Senwes Park
Potchefstroom, South Africa
Formerly: North West Cricket Stadium, Sedgars Park
Senwes Park sits on Thabo Mbeki Way in the Bult district of Potchefstroom, South Africa. It is a cricket stadium, though it has occasionally hosted other sports. The venue opened in 2000. It hosted its first international match, an ODI between South Africa and New Zealand, in October 2000, and became a Test match venue in 2002.
The ground has seen its name change several times since it opened. It was originally the North West Cricket Stadium, then Sedgars Park, before becoming Senwes Park in 2008. In September 2021, it was renamed JB Marks Oval, though cricket contexts still frequently use the Senwes Park moniker. The primary tenant is the North West Dragons, the provincial cricket team for the North West Province. It also serves as the home ground for the Highveld Lions in domestic cricket and AFL South Africa, the national Australian rules football team.
The stadium hosted matches during the 2003 Cricket World Cup and the 2005 Women’s Cricket World Cup. While primarily focused on cricket, it has hosted occasional rugby events, including the Women’s Varsity 7s tournament in October 2022. It is not the home ground for the Griquas rugby team, who play at Griqua Park in Kimberley, or the NWU Pukke rugby team, who primarily play at Olën Park.
Non-cricket events have included the Harvest Potchefstroom 2019 religious event featuring Pastor At Boshoff and the CRC Music band on August 21, 2019, and a concert by South African rapper Nasty C on October 25, 2024, as part of his Ivyson Tour, which was the result of a fan-driven campaign. The playing surface is natural grass. The current seating capacity is 18,000; however, historical sources from around 2017 cite the capacity as 10,000. No official attendance record for any specific match was found.
