The Coop Norrbotten Arena sits on the edge of Luleå. The boards around the rink are plastered with advertisements for local businesses and steel manufacturers, a reminder of the town's industrial roots. A large scoreboard hangs from the ceiling, flanked by screens, while the lighting rig above casts a uniform glow across the playing surface.
This ground has lived through several changes. It opened in 1970 under the name Delfinen, a name that stuck for decades before the renovation that gave the arena its current scale. The expansion in 2009 added more boxes and seating, pushing the capacity to its current level of 6,150. It is a versatile space; while it is the home of Luleå HF in the Swedish Hockey League, it has also hosted the semi-finals of Melodifestivalen, the national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, proving that the ice can be covered and the venue transformed for music as easily as for sport.
