It has been the home of the VKB Knights since they were known as Griqualand West. The venue was built by the diamond company that gave the town its fortune, intended as a recreation club for its workers. The original De Beers Stadium was replaced by the current oval, and the first domestic matches were played in the 1973–74 season. The capacity holds 11,000 people, a figure that has not changed since the opening.

Its international history is modest but precise. The first Men's One Day International was played on April 7, 1998, when Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka. It also hosted the 2003 Cricket World Cup, including a match where West Indies faced Kenya. More recently, it hosted England against South Africa in February 2023. Despite being described as multi-purpose, no local football teams use it; the primary football stadium in Kimberley is the Galeshewe Stadium.
