Edgbaston Cricket Ground
Birmingham, United Kingdom
Formerly: County Ground, Edgbaston Stadium, Birmingham Cricket Stadium
Edgbaston Cricket Ground has always been a place where the boundaries between milestones are drawn clearly. It holds the record for the first senior day/night Test match played in England, staged in August 2017, and was also the site for the first competitive floodlit game in Britain seventeen years earlier. The ground is touch and go on certain evening fixtures when the "Brumbrella" rain cover must be deployed, a system that stands in contrast to the hybrid pitch installed on the main square in 2020. That surface is reinforced with polymer fibres, a technical necessity for a venue that has hosted the ICC Cricket World Cup Final in 2019 and the Commonwealth Games women's competition in 2022.
What makes the place distinct is the scale of its recent transformation. A £32 million redevelopment completed in 2011 demolished the old pavilion and the Leslie Deakins, R. V. Ryder, and William Ansell Stands, replacing them with new South and West Stands that brought the capacity to 25,000. The ground has not had an official sponsored name since it moved to this land leased from the Calthorpe Estate. Warwickshire County Cricket Club has remained the primary tenant since 1894, while Birmingham Bears and Birmingham Phoenix joined in 2014 and 2021 respectively.
The venue has not travelled to make up the numbers for major tournaments. It hosted the ICC Champions Trophy Final in 2013, where India defeated England, and continues to hold the T20 Blast Finals Day for thirteen successive seasons. The all-time attendance record for a single match stands at 24,156, set during the 2017 Champions Trophy clash against Pakistan. A single-day record of 32,000 was recorded for a Test match against the West Indies in 1957. The site is currently undergoing further change, with a new hotel and replacement stand set to replace the Priory and Raglan stands by 2027.
