Hans-Lackner-Halle
Vienna, Austria
Formerly: Sporthalle Atzgersdorf
The Hans-Lackner-Halle sits quietly in the Atzgersdorf neighbourhood of Vienna. It is a municipal hall, built in 1974. For decades it carried the name Sporthalle Atzgersdorf.
The round design of the hall is its most obvious feature. It is not a purpose-built arena for a single sport, but a multi-use space. The last time the interior was stripped back and rebuilt was in 2023. The renovation raised the ceiling and laid down a new sports floor, though the exact material remains a matter of technical specification rather than public record.
This is the home base for MADx WAT Atzgersdorf, bringing the local handball teams into focus during the winter months. The hall has also hosted the bigger events, including the HLA Supercup and the WHA Supercup, where the local side faced off against Hypo Niederösterreich. These matches draw the crowd in, filling the roughly four hundred seats that line the curved perimeter. The atmosphere is shaped by the proximity of the stands; the noise stays inside rather than dissipating into the open air.
The venue is accessible from Steinergasse, but the building itself does not announce its presence with grand architecture. It is a functional space, updated for modern standards but retaining the original footprint established fifty years ago.
