Harare Sports Club
Harare, Zimbabwe
Formerly: Salisbury Sports Club
The Harare Sports Club Ground sits at the corner of Josiah Tongogara Avenue and Fifth Street in Alexandra Park, a layout that dates back to 1900 when the club was founded. For decades it was known as the Salisbury Sports Club, a name that stuck until 1982, the year the city changed its name following independence. The ground is primarily a cricket stadium but has served as a multi-sports facility for football and rugby.
The most visible change to the landscape arrived in 2023. Three tall floodlight towers now dominate the skyline, installed to host day-night cricket matches for the Zim Afro T10 tournament. Before this, the ground had only played host to day matches. The first recorded first-class cricket match took place here in 1910, long before the lights were turned on.
The playing surface is natural grass. The venue hosted the 2014 Zimbabwe Tri-Series and the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, events that brought international teams to this suburban setting. The official seating capacity is 10,000, though temporary stands can extend this to approximately 25,000. The attendance record stands at 26,000 spectators, set during a match between Rhodesia and the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in 1956.
The first international match under the new lights was a T20I between Zimbabwe and Ireland on December 7, 2023. The ground remains a functional space.
